WTF is the ThreadsApp and Why Should I Care?

What the F is the ThreadsApp?
WTF is the ThreadsApp?

I just got back from a networking event and one of the big topics we were discussing, while standing in a pool sipping my water (alcohol-free for 7 m months now), was the new app that's all they hype... Threads from Instagram.

One of my clients was there and she said, “I’ve been avoiding talking to you about this because I don’t need another distraction.” Then she asked, ‘what’s the difference between threads and Instagram and why do I need to be on both’.

Usually, I’m an early adopter, however, I was pretty late to the game on this one as I was away during the launch and missed the initial 100M human stampede, but jumped right in with two feet on Day 3. What’s cool is that the little number that initially appeared next to your little thread symbol was the number you were when you signed up. I was 91,016,659… on day 3. Or at least that's what I was told.

Sew, (that’s a threads pun), what’s all the hype about?

As someone who used to love Twitter in the early days before it became all political and filled with hate and noise, it’s like Twitter inside your IG.

Think of it this way - if you could have a direct conversation with anyone on your IG feed, what would you talk to them about? What questions would you ask them? What would you want to say to people who you follow? If you could talk to a Brand, what would you tell them?

It’s about ENGAGING in a deeper way. It’s like getting to sit in the green room with brands and people before and after the show and show is Instagram. Make sense?

Here are a few things I’ve done on Threads this past week:

  • I posted a thought each day this week with a question to engage anyone who might see it. Got a little bit of love since many of my people aren't quite there yet. I also themed each day, like, motivation Monday, Tuesday Tech Tip, Wednesday Wisdom…. You get the point.

  • I responded to questions and posts from people and brands I follow on Instagram - and it was pretty cool that I got a response from them whereas if I had commented on their post on IG, they probably would not have answered me back. This is a great time to take advantage of this engagement while the hype is still huge.

  • Reposted a Thread to my IG story, just to see the fun graphic that shows up behind your post. Sort of like the one on the top of this blog post.

A few ways you can consider using threads:

  • Share your thoughts - even if some are random - it’s ok. Just don’t make them too random.

  • Open up the conversation by asking questions that you truly want answers to - like 'where are my paleo friends?' or 'had anyone tried the Carnivore Diet and what did you think?' or 'Is anyone training for the Centenarian Decatholon?'

  • Engage with Brands that are openly asking questions in their feeds - if you’re looking to be a brand ambassador, this is a great way to get noticed. Respond wisely.

  • Follow @threadsapp and @mosseri for up-to-the-minute info on the app.

Intrigued?

Here’s how to sign up, if you haven’t already.

  • Go to your IG profile.

  • Click on the Hamburger menu in the top right (it’s the three horizontal lines - aka Hamburger).

  • The second button down is Threads. Just click on the word ‘threads’, then click ‘GET THREADS’ and download the app.

  • When prompted, import your photo, bio and links from IG - super easy - and you’re good to go.

NOTE - If you downloaded the app before yesterday, click on it again to get the updates. They are literally updating it on the daily, fixing bugs, adding features, and making it better.

Now that you’re in, click on the choice to follow all of your people from IG. This way, your feed will be populated with the people you already know, like, sort of trust, and follow.

The fun part - once you jump into the app, anyone who already follows you who is on there will instantly be following you. Bam - instant followers - so cool.

Let me know if this was helpful and I’ll see you on the Thread!

xoxo - Hayley
